Looking for wet room floor paint? First check whether the proposed coating and complete floor system are specifically approved for wet-room use. A general floor paint, an anti-slip additive or a “water-resistant” description does not establish that suitability.
Our product guidance: Extreme Paints Heavy-Duty Polyurethane Floor Paint is not suitable for wet room floors or permanently damp environments. We do not recommend using it as a shower-floor finish or wet-room waterproofing system.
Wet rooms and bathrooms: check the actual exposure
A floor exposed to direct shower water is a different application from a dry area in a bathroom. Describe the substrate, existing waterproofing, drainage, cleaning regime and expected water exposure to the manufacturer or specialist installer before selecting a coating.
Questions to ask before choosing a wet room floor coating
- Is the exact product and complete system expressly suitable for a wet room or shower floor?
- Is it compatible with the substrate, existing waterproofing and any previous coating?
- What preparation, primer, application and curing instructions apply?
- What evidence supports its slip resistance in the intended wet conditions?
- Which cleaners can be used, and what maintenance is required?
Get product-specific answers rather than relying on a generic polyurethane or epoxy label. Do not assume that all paints in either category offer the same performance.
Is polyurethane floor paint suitable?
Our Extreme Paints Heavy-Duty Polyurethane Floor Paint is intended for correctly prepared garage, workshop, warehouse, factory and other appropriate interior or sheltered floors. It is not recommended for wet room floors. Its anti-slip option does not change that limitation.
What about epoxy and anti-slip coatings?
Only select a particular system when its manufacturer confirms the proposed wet-room application. An anti-slip finish provides texture; it does not, by itself, establish waterproofing or wet-room suitability. We are not recommending a generic epoxy or anti-slip floor paint from our catalogue as a wet-room system.
Preparation and curing
Follow the chosen manufacturer's complete instructions for the approved system. Do not substitute a different primer, add an unapproved hardener or rely on generic drying times. The area should remain out of use until the manufacturer's required curing period is complete.
Avoid these common assumptions
- “Water-resistant” means the whole floor system is waterproof.
- Any polyurethane or epoxy paint can be used in a shower.
- Adding anti-slip grit makes an otherwise unsuitable coating suitable for a wet room.
- Touch dry means ready for water exposure or normal use.
