Primers and sealers have specific roles. An unconventional project should proceed only when the product manufacturer confirms the surface, exposure and complete application system.
Keep product roles separate
A concrete primer prepares a surface for a compatible finish. A paving sealer may be designed for a particular paving material. Neither role establishes waterproofing, food-contact suitability, heat resistance or approval for continual immersion.
Worktops, fireplaces and barbecue areas
Do not recommend a general concrete or driveway sealer for a food-contact surface or one exposed to heat. A solvent-free or water-based description is not proof of food safety. Obtain explicit approval for the proposed application.
Birdbaths, ponds and fountains
Require approval for immersion, the water conditions and any animal or wildlife exposure. Do not assume that a coating described as water-resistant can stop leaks or is appropriate for a water feature.
Basements, roofs and balconies
Investigate the cause of leaks, damp and damage before coating. A decorative floor finish does not replace a designed waterproofing system. Roof access and suspect asbestos-containing materials require specialist assessment; do not disturb such materials to prepare them for paint.
Choose within the approved range
Compare concrete primers and sealers, driveway and patio sealers and roof paints and sealers. Describe the complete project to Trade Supplies UK before using a product outside its confirmed instructions.
