Polyurethane Floor Paint: Uses, Wet Room Limits & Outdoor Choices

Polyurethane Floor Paint: Uses, Wet Room Limits & Outdoor Choices

Polyurethane floor paint can provide a hard-wearing finish for prepared garage, workshop, warehouse and factory floors. Suitability depends on the exact product and the conditions it will face: the word “polyurethane” alone does not confirm that a coating is suitable for wet rooms or fully exposed exterior floors.

Important product limitation: Extreme Paints Heavy-Duty Polyurethane Floor Paint is not suitable for wet room floors or permanently damp environments. Its current guidance recommends interior and sheltered floor surfaces. Do not choose it as a wet-room waterproofing system.

What is polyurethane floor paint?

Our Extreme Paints Heavy-Duty Polyurethane Floor Paint is a solvent-based, single-pack coating for correctly prepared concrete, timber, porous masonry and primed metal. It is available in smooth gloss and textured anti-slip finishes. Once fully cured, it offers a hard-wearing surface for regular vehicle and forklift traffic and good resistance to oils, fuels and common industrial spillages.

Can polyurethane paint be used on wet room floors?

Do not assume that a water-resistant floor paint is a complete waterproofing system. Our Extreme polyurethane floor paint is not recommended for wet room floors. For a shower floor, wet room or continuously damp area, obtain written confirmation from the manufacturer or specialist supplier that the complete proposed system is suitable for that use, including the substrate, waterproofing, finish and slip-resistance requirements.

For more on this distinction, read our wet room and bathroom floor-paint suitability guide.

What about outdoor concrete, patios and decking?

Choose a coating specifically intended for the surface and exposure conditions. Our polyurethane product guidance recommends a dedicated exterior coating for fully exposed patios, driveways and floors subject to continuous weathering.

  • For prepared concrete patios and paths, compare Quick-Drying Concrete Floor & Patio Paint + Sealer and check its surface exclusions.
  • For prepared wooden decking, see Anti-Slip Decking Paint; it is not suitable for composite decking.
  • Do not assume any of these products is suitable for glazed tiles, permanently wet areas or a different substrate without confirmation.

Preparing and applying our polyurethane floor paint

  1. Clean and degrease the floor, remove loose material and make sure the substrate is dry and sound.
  2. Prepare very smooth or power-floated concrete as directed and prime bare, porous or mechanically ground concrete with the recommended primer.
  3. This is a single-pack paint: do not add an epoxy hardener or an unapproved additive. Apply two thin coats by brush or roller; do not spray the anti-slip finish.
  4. At approximately 18°C, allow around 6–8 hours to touch dry and recoat, 24 hours before light foot traffic, 72 hours before vehicles or forklifts, and 7 days for full cure. Conditions can extend these times.

Read the concrete-floor preparation guide and the current product instructions before starting.

Check suitability before ordering

Tell us the substrate, existing coating, whether the floor is indoors or exposed, and the expected traffic and chemical exposure. Contact Trade Supplies UK if you need help checking the intended use. We do not recommend our Extreme polyurethane floor paint for wet rooms.
