Vintage Varnish Clear Yacht Varnish is a premium, solvent-borne polyurethane coating specially formulated to protect timber exposed to harsh marine and outdoor conditions. Its long-oil polyurethane resin creates a deep, mirror-like gloss that seals wood against salt spray, rain, humidity, and household chemicals while staying flexible enough to move with the natural expansion and contraction of timber.

Enhanced with advanced UV absorbers, this yacht varnish helps preserve the wood’s natural colour and clarity, guarding against fading, yellowing, and sun damage even on bright, sun-drenched decks or exterior joinery. The tough, abrasion-resistant film stands up to heavy foot traffic, knocks, and daily wear, making it perfect for everything from classic yacht brightwork to hardwood furniture and garden features.

Designed for both interior and exterior use, Vintage Varnish bonds strongly to properly prepared bare wood or existing varnish layers. Whether you are refinishing a yacht cockpit, coating hardwood doors, or sealing fine furniture, it delivers a durable, crystal-clear finish with professional marine-grade performance.

Safety

This is a flammable, solvent-borne polyurethane varnish. Apply only in well-ventilated areas. Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Avoid inhaling vapours or allowing prolonged skin contact. Always wear gloves, eye protection, and suitable clothing. Do not smoke or eat while using this product. Dispose of waste and cleaning materials responsibly according to local regulations. Consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full guidance.

Surface Preparation

  • Sand to fresh wood using P180 grit to remove previous coatings and expose clean timber.
  • Remove all dust, oils, and loose varnish to ensure maximum adhesion.
  • Ensure the moisture content is 15% or lower before applying the first coat.

First Coat

  • Thin the varnish by 10% with white spirit for better penetration on bare wood.
  • Apply using a high-quality natural bristle brush or foam roller, working along the grain for an even finish.

Intermediate Sanding

  • After approximately 12 hours, lightly sand the surface with P320 grit to remove any raised fibres and achieve a smooth base.
  • Wipe away sanding residue with a clean, dry cloth.

Second & Third Coats

  • Apply full-viscosity coats without thinning, maintaining a wet edge to prevent lap marks and streaks.
  • Allow 12 hours drying time between coats for proper curing.

Optional Extra Build

  • For marine brightwork or high-wear surfaces, apply up to 5 coats over a week to achieve a deep, high-gloss finish and maximum UV protection.

Environmental Conditions

  • Avoid varnishing in direct sunlight, below 10 °C, or when heavy condensation is likely.
  • Protect coated surfaces from heavy dew or rain during the curing period to ensure a flawless, long-lasting finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many coats of yacht varnish should I apply?
For most exterior joinery and furniture, at least three coats provide strong weather protection and a deep gloss. For marine brightwork or decks, up to five coats is recommended for maximum UV resistance and durability.
Can I use this varnish indoors as well as outdoors?
Yes, Vintage Varnish is suitable for both interior and exterior timber, including bar tops, stair treads, and cabin trim, offering the same crystal-clear, high-gloss finish indoors.
Do I need a primer before applying yacht varnish?
No primer is required. Simply sand the wood to a smooth, clean surface and apply the first coat thinned by 10% for better penetration and adhesion.
How long does the varnish take to dry between coats?
At 18 °C, the varnish is touch dry in 6–8 hours and ready for recoating after 12 hours. Cooler temperatures or higher humidity will extend these times.
Is this varnish resistant to UV damage?
Yes, it contains advanced UV absorbers that protect wood from sunlight, helping prevent yellowing, fading, and cracking in marine and outdoor environments.
Can it be applied over old varnish?
Yes, but the old varnish must be sanded to remove loose areas and to create a key for adhesion. Ensure the surface is clean and dry before application.
What is the best way to apply the varnish?
Use a high-quality natural bristle brush or foam roller, applying thin, even coats along the grain to maintain a smooth, mirror-like gloss.
Will it protect against salt water and marine conditions?
Yes, the solvent-borne polyurethane formula is designed to withstand salt spray, rain, and everyday marine exposure, making it ideal for yacht brightwork and exterior woodwork.
How do I clean tools after use?
Clean brushes and rollers immediately with white spirit while the varnish is still wet. Dried varnish will require stronger solvents for removal.
Can I use this varnish on softwood decking or garden furniture?
Yes, but ensure the wood is fully dry and properly sanded. Multiple coats will enhance protection against weather and daily wear.
How long before the varnished surface can be used?
Light handling is possible after 24 hours, but allow a full 7 days for complete curing before heavy use or exposure to standing water.
What is the shelf life of this varnish?
If stored tightly sealed between 5–30 °C and away from direct sunlight, the varnish has a shelf life of at least 12 months without loss of performance.
