Vintage Varnish Clear Yacht Varnish is a solvent‑borne, polyurethane yacht varnish engineered for the rigors of marine and outdoor environments. The long‑oil resin flows to a mirror‑gloss finish that repels salt spray, rain, and household chemicals while remaining flexible to accommodate natural timber movement.

Formulated with UV absorbers, the varnish preserves the wood’s color and clarity, even on bright, sun‑drenched decks or yacht brightwork. Its abrasion‑resistant film protects cabin soles, exterior doors, handrails, and garden furniture from daily wear.

Suitable for both interior and exterior woodwork, Vintage Varnish bonds tenaciously to properly prepared bare timber or existing varnish coats, making it ideal for classic yachts, hardwood doors, or fine furniture.

Ideal Uses

Yacht brightwork • Cockpit coamings • Exterior joinery & windows • Interior cabin trim • Hardwood furniture • Stair treads • Bar tops • Timber doors & frames

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this varnish below the waterline?
No, this marine-grade yacht varnish is only for topsides and brightwork. Use an epoxy barrier and antifouling for submerged areas.
Will the varnish yellow over time?
Minimal ambering due to non-yellowing resins and UV blockers; lighter woods retain brightness longer.
Can I tint the varnish?
Yes—you can add up to 5% oil-based stain or compatible tint to the first coat for a warmer tone.
Is sanding between every coat essential?
Light denibbing ensures better adhesion and removes nibs. Skip only if recoating within 24 hours and the surface is flawless.
How do I repair a scratch in the varnish?
Lightly sand the scratch area plus 25 mm around it. Reapply two coats of clear yacht varnish, blending outward.
Is this safe for countertops?
Yes, once cured, it resists household spills. For food prep, use cutting boards.
Recommended HVLP spray setup?
Use a 1.4 mm tip at 25 psi. Thin 10% with white spirit for smooth application.
Can I apply over water-based varnish?
Yes—if fully cured, sanded, and degreased. Always test adhesion first.
What is the minimum application temperature?
Do not apply below 10 °C. Cooler temps slow curing and risk bloom.
How many coats should I apply on teak deck furniture?
Apply 5 thin coats for optimum depth and UV resistance.
Is the varnish slip-resistant?
No, the gloss finish is smooth. Add micro-bead additive on flooring for grip.
How do I avoid brush marks?
Use a natural-bristle brush, maintain a wet edge, and tip-off lightly along the grain.
What’s the clean-up method?
Use white spirit while wet. Cured drips require scraping and sanding.
What’s the shelf life once opened?
Seal tightly and store cool. Best used within 12 months for premium results.
What PPE is recommended?
Wear an organic vapour respirator, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Ensure ventilation.
