Extreme Playground Paint is a high-performance, solvent-based polyurethane (PU) coating designed for playground surfaces, MUGA courts, recreational areas, markings, and demanding industrial environments that require long-lasting durability. Manufactured in the UK under strict ISO 9001 quality standards, this heavy-duty polyurethane paint delivers outstanding abrasion resistance, chemical protection, and a smooth professional finish.

Unlike standard exterior paints, this hard-wearing polyurethane formula is engineered to handle constant foot traffic, scuffs, knocks, oils, and chemical spillages, making it one of the most reliable solutions for concrete, timber, masonry, and primed metal substrates. Available in a wide range of bold, UV-resistant colours including Grey, Light Grey, Dark Grey, Mid Green, Dark Green, Red, Post Office Red, Orange, Blue, JCB Yellow, White, Black, and Brown, it combines aesthetic appeal with robust protection, ensuring your playground or surface remains safe, easy to clean, and cost-effective for years. An optional anti-slip grit additive is available for slopes, ramps, and wet-weather surfaces for added safety.

For maximum adhesion on bare or porous substrates, ensure the surface is properly prepared and mechanically keyed before painting. This ensures deep penetration, surface stability, and a longer service life.

Suitable Substrates: This polyurethane coating is versatile and adheres to a wide range of properly prepared surfaces, making it suitable for:

  • Concrete Surfaces: Works on bare, sealed, or mechanically ground concrete commonly found in playgrounds, activity zones, workshops, and pathways.

  • Timber Surfaces: Ideal for play equipment, decking, climbing frames, sheds, barns, and timber flooring in heavy-use areas.

  • Porous Masonry: Adheres well to brick, blockwork, and stone surfaces.

  • Metal Surfaces: When primed correctly, suitable for skips, containers, gates, railings, machinery, equipment, and metal play structures.

Note: Avoid applying to self-levelling screeds unless tested first, as most are non-porous and unsuitable for solvent-based coatings.

Coverage & Spread Rate: Maximise value and performance with predictable coverage across different pack sizes:

  • 5–7 m² per litre, depending on surface porosity

  • 5 L tin covers approx. 15 m² (two coats)

  • 10 L tin covers approx. 30 m² (two coats)

  • 20 L tin covers approx. 60 m² (two coats)

  • 1000 L IBC tank covers approx. 3,000 m² (two coats) — ideal for large-scale projects and local authority contracts

Applying two thin coats at right angles ensures a uniform finish, greater adhesion, and long-term durability.

Drying & Curing Times (@ 18 °C): Designed for professional environments where downtime must be minimised:

  • Touch Dry: 6–8 hours

  • Recoat Window: 6–8 hours

  • Light Foot Traffic: 24 hours

  • Heavy Duty Service: 72 hours

  • Full Chemical Resistance / Cure: 7 days

This curing schedule ensures playgrounds and surfaces are back in service quickly without compromising hardness or protective qualities.

Storage & Thinning: For long-term product stability and correct application:

  • Store between 5 °C and 30 °C in sealed containers, away from heat, sparks, and open flames.

  • For spray application, thin with white spirit or PU thinner (≤ 5%).

  • Always order the required batch in one purchase to ensure colour consistency across the project.

Extreme Playground Paint is designed for outdoor recreational surfaces across primary and secondary schools, nurseries, community play areas, sports facilities, and public parks. It is commonly specified for playground markings including hopscotch grids, number lines, alphabet trails, and games courts; MUGA court line marking for netball, basketball, and tennis; timber play equipment restoration on adventure playgrounds and outdoor learning areas; decorative zone marking for quiet areas, story circles, and sensory gardens; and pathway and access route marking in schools and recreational facilities. This versatility makes it the preferred choice for facilities managers, local authority contractors, and playground specialists who need durable, compliant surface marking that withstands heavy daily use whilst maintaining vibrant appearance and child safety standards.

Application Instructions

Surface Preparation

All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from loose material, moss, algae, oil, grease, and existing flaking paint. For tarmac and asphalt surfaces, sweep thoroughly and remove all debris. Treat biological growth with a suitable biocidal wash and allow 7 days for complete kill before cleaning. Pressure-wash at medium pressure to remove dirt, contaminants, and loose surface material. Allow to dry completely; moisture content should be below 15% before application. For concrete surfaces, remove laitance, dust, and contaminants by mechanical sweeping or light abrading. Patch any significant cracks or surface damage with appropriate repair compound and allow to cure fully before painting.

Priming

Priming is generally not required on sound tarmac, concrete, or previously painted surfaces in good condition. On highly porous or heavily weathered substrates, or where maximum adhesion is critical, apply one coat of Extreme Multi-Surface Primer diluted 10% with clean water. Allow 2--4 hours drying time before topcoating. This step improves penetration, reduces absorbency, and enhances colour uniformity on variable surfaces.

Mixing

Stir thoroughly for at least 2 minutes using a paddle mixer or broad flat stirrer before application and regularly throughout use to maintain uniform pigment dispersion. For the anti-slip variant, ensure the silica grit additive is evenly dispersed throughout the paint before application. Do not shake, as this may introduce air bubbles. The product is supplied ready for use; do not thin unless absolutely necessary for spray application (maximum 5% clean water).

First Coat

Apply the first coat by brush, medium-nap roller, or airless spray equipment. Brush application is recommended for detailed line work, lettering, and intricate designs. Roller application is effective for larger zones and background areas. For spray application, use an airless sprayer with a 15--17 thou tip at 1,500--2,000 psi. Apply a thin, even coat across the marked area, avoiding puddling or excessive build-up. Work systematically to maintain wet edges and prevent lap marks. Allow 3--4 hours drying time between coats under normal conditions.

Second Coat

Apply the second coat using the same method, working at right angles to the first pass where practical to ensure complete coverage and vibrant colour depth. The second coat will have higher coverage (approximately 6--8 m²/L) as the substrate has been sealed by the first coat. Pay particular attention to edges and fine detail to ensure crisp, professional finish. For line marking, use masking tape to achieve sharp, clean edges.

Optional Third Coat

For maximum colour intensity on very porous substrates, or where extended durability is required on heavily trafficked areas such as MUGA court centres or playground entry zones, a third coat may be applied after the second coat has fully dried. This provides enhanced wear resistance and colour vibrancy in high-impact locations.

Curing & Reopening Times

Light foot traffic and inspection access after 12 hours. Return play area to full use after 48 hours. Complete cure and maximum durability after 7 days. Protect freshly painted surfaces from rain or standing water for a minimum of 2 hours after application. Avoid heavy equipment or vehicle traffic over painted areas for 48 hours.

Pro Tips

Schedule application during dry, stable weather with at least 2 hours of dry conditions forecast. Work during moderate temperatures (10--25 °C) with low humidity for optimal drying. Avoid application in direct, intense sunlight or on surfaces above 30 °C. Use quality masking tape and remove whilst paint is still slightly tacky for cleanest edges. For large area coverage, work in manageable sections and maintain wet edges to prevent visible joins. Apply decorative and detailed work last to avoid accidental damage during main area coating.

Clean-Up

Clean all brushes, rollers, and spray equipment immediately after use with clean water. For stubborn dried paint, use warm soapy water and a stiff brush. Flush spray lines thoroughly and store equipment clean and dry. Dispose of waste materials and contaminated cleaning water in accordance with local environmental regulations. Do not pour rinsings into drains or watercourses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to prepare the surface before applying playground paint?
Yes, the substrate must be sound, dry, and free from dust, oil, grease, and loose coatings. New concrete must be fully cured and mechanically prepared, while smooth or previously sealed surfaces should be keyed to create an open profile for proper adhesion.
How long does Extreme Paints Playground Paint take to dry?
At around 18 °C, it is touch dry in 6–8 hours, ready for recoating the same day, walkable after 24 hours, ready for heavy-duty service after 72 hours, with full chemical resistance and cure achieved in seven days.
Is playground paint safe for children and schools?
Once fully cured, the coating is safe for use in schools, nurseries, and public play areas. Children should only access the surface after the paint has reached full cure, typically 7 days, for complete safety.
What surfaces is playground paint suitable for?
It adheres well to properly prepared concrete, timber, porous masonry such as brick and blockwork, and correctly primed metal surfaces, making it ideal for playgrounds, MUGA courts, walkways, and recreational zones.
Can playground paint be used on tarmac or asphalt?
This solvent-based polyurethane is formulated for concrete, timber, masonry, and primed metal. For tarmac or asphalt surfaces, we recommend testing on a small inconspicuous area first to confirm compatibility before full application.
