Extreme Decking Paint is a water-based exterior timber paint for prepared softwood, hardwood and sound previously painted wooden decking. Its smooth satin finish adds colour while helping protect decking boards from weathering, UV exposure and everyday foot traffic.

Use on properly prepared timber decking, wooden steps, verandas and walkways. Remove algae, moss, grease and loose coatings before painting, allow the timber to dry and test compatibility on previously treated surfaces. Not suitable for composite decking.

The application is straightforward:

Apply the paint by brush, roller or spray. Apply two thin, even coats, avoiding pooling in grooves and between decking boards. Stir well before use, and protect the fresh coating from rain during early curing.

Suitable Substrates:

  • Softwood and hardwood decking boards (new or previously coated, once clean and sound)
  • Exterior wooden steps, verandas, handrails, and garden furniture
  • Prepared masonry and concrete slabs where a uniform satin finish is desired

Not suitable for composite decking. Always test a small, inconspicuous area on unfamiliar surfaces.

Coverage & Spread Rate:

  • 6–8 m² per litre per coat, dependent on timber porosity and profile (grooved boards absorb more).
  • Two thin coats are recommended for full weatherproof protection and colour depth.

Drying & Curing Times (@ 18 °C):

  • Touch dry: 2–4 hours

  • Recoat: 2–4 hours

  • Light foot traffic: ~8 hours

  • Full use: 24 hours

  • Full weatherproof cure: 7 days
Cool, damp, or shaded conditions will extend drying; protect fresh coatings from rain during early cure.

Storage & Clean-Up:

Store between 5–30 °C in frost-free conditions. Reseal firmly between uses. Clean brushes and rollers with warm, soapy water while the paint is still wet; no harsh solvents required. During peak demand, plain tins may be supplied; product quality is identical.

Safety Notice:

This water-based, low-VOC outdoor coating should be applied with adequate ventilation. Avoid skin and eye contact and keep out of reach of children and pets until fully dry. For PPE guidance and full safety information, consult the product Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Note:
However, please bear in mind on some occasions the packaging may arrive slightly damaged. Please do not order if you won’t be satisfied with this.

For correctly prepared exterior timber decking, wooden steps, verandas and walkways. The smooth satin finish adds colour and helps protect against weathering and UV exposure. Not suitable for composite decking.

Suitable for domestic and commercial timber decking where a coloured, weather-resistant coating is required. Test compatibility with existing coatings or timber treatments before painting.

Unlike a penetrating decking oil, this paint forms a coloured surface coating. Good preparation and ongoing cleaning and maintenance are important for performance.

Application Instructions

Surface Preparation
Clean the decking thoroughly to remove algae, dirt, moss, grease, and any loose or flaking coatings. Ensure timber moisture content is below 18% before application. Sand glossy or weathered areas back to a matte key to ensure proper adhesion.

Mixing
Stir the paint with a paddle mixer for at least 2 minutes until uniform. Stir periodically during application to maintain a consistent finish.

First Coat
Apply a thin, even coat using a brush or roller, following the grain of the timber. Take care to avoid puddling in grooves or between decking boards.

Second Coat
After 2–4 hours at 18 °C, apply a second thin coat at right angles to the first pass. This ensures complete coverage, consistent colour, and a strong weatherproof film.

Application Method
Apply the paint by brush or roller. Stir periodically during use to keep the finish consistent.

Curing
Protect freshly coated surfaces from rain or moisture for a minimum of 6 hours. Allow 8 hours before light foot traffic, 24 hours before replacing garden furniture, and 7 days before the coating reaches full weatherproof performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What surfaces can I apply Extreme Decking Paint to?
Extreme Decking Paint is suitable for correctly prepared exterior softwood and hardwood timber decking, wooden steps, verandas and walkways. The timber must be clean, dry, sound and free from algae, moss, grease and loose coatings. Test compatibility with previous treatments before painting. Not suitable for composite decking.
Can Extreme Decking Paint be used outdoors in all weather?
Yes, once cured the coating is designed for exterior timber and offers UV and weather resistance. Apply in dry conditions, ideally between 10°C and 25°C, and protect the fresh coating from rain during early curing. Cool, damp or shaded conditions extend drying times.
How does Extreme Decking Paint compare to decking oil?
Decking paint forms a durable, coloured protective coating on the surface, while decking oil penetrates the timber and requires frequent reapplication. This paint offers longer-lasting colour and stronger UV protection than traditional oils.
What’s the expected lifespan of Extreme Decking Paint in UK climate?
Service life depends on timber condition, preparation, application, traffic and weather exposure. Inspect the decking regularly, keep it clean and apply maintenance coats when the finish begins to wear. A fixed lifespan cannot be guaranteed.
Is primer needed before applying Extreme Decking Paint?
No, a separate primer is not usually required as this product is self-priming. On bare or porous softwoods such as pine and cedar, a thinned first coat improves adhesion and gives more even sealing, while hardwoods can usually be painted directly after proper cleaning and degreasing.
How many coats of Extreme Decking Paint are recommended for best results?
Two coats are recommended for most surfaces. High-traffic areas such as steps and walkways may benefit from a third coat for maximum durability and colour depth.
Can Extreme Decking Paint be sprayed for faster application?
Yes, Extreme Decking Paint can be applied by brush, roller or spray. For best results on grooved decking boards, a brush or roller helps work the paint into the profile and avoid pooling in grooves.
How much coverage can I expect from Extreme Decking Paint?
Coverage is approximately 6–8 m² per litre per coat on smooth surfaces and 5–7 m² on rough or porous timber. As a guide, a 5L tin covers around 30–40 m² per coat and a 20L tin approximately 120–160 m² per coat; for a full two-coat system, coverage is roughly half these values.
How long does Extreme Decking Paint take to dry?
At 18°C, the paint is touch dry in 2–4 hours and can be recoated after 2–4 hours. Allow around 8 hours before light foot traffic, 24 hours before full use and 7 days for full weatherproof cure. Cooler or damp conditions extend these times.
How should I clean tools after using Extreme Decking Paint?
Clean brushes, rollers and equipment with warm soapy water immediately after use, as this is a water-based product. Dried paint may require specialist cleaning solutions.
Is Extreme Decking Paint pet-safe once dry?
Yes, once fully cured the water-based coating is safe for children and pets to walk on. Keep them away during application and curing — allow around 24 hours before full use and 7 days for full cure at 18°C. Follow the product label and Safety Data Sheet before returning the area to use.
Is Extreme Decking Paint low-odour and environmentally safe?
Yes, it is a water-based, low-VOC, low-odour coating. Apply with adequate ventilation, avoid skin and eye contact and follow the product label and Safety Data Sheet. Do not allow paint or wash-water to enter drains, ponds or watercourses.
How do I maintain painted decking?
Sweep regularly and wash with mild detergent to remove dirt and algae. Avoid pressure washing at close range. Apply a maintenance coat to worn or high-traffic areas as needed to keep the finish protected and looking fresh.
