Extreme Anti-Slip Path Paint is a hard-wearing, water-based acrylic coating developed to bring lasting grip and colour to garden paths, footpaths, walkways and pedestrian access routes. Built for the British climate, it forms a tough textured film that holds its footing when surfaces are wet, mossy or frosted, while giving tired paving a clean, freshly-finished look.

Fine silica grit aggregates are blended into the coating to create an even, consistent surface profile underfoot. The result is dependable traction on damp or shaded paths without a harshly abrasive texture — comfortable enough for everyday domestic use, tough enough for busy commercial walkways. Because the formula is water-based and low in odour, it can be used around homes, schools, care homes and public buildings with very little disruption.

The flexible acrylic film moves with the substrate, which helps resist the hairline cracking that often appears on concrete paths through freeze-thaw cycles. Breathable film technology lets trapped moisture escape from the surface below, reducing the blistering and peeling that can affect less forgiving coatings. UV-stable pigments hold their colour through long summer exposure, so paths stay looking sharp season after season rather than washing out to a patchy grey.

Formulated and manufactured in the UK, this coating is a practical choice for homeowners refreshing a weathered garden path, landscapers finishing a new installation, and facilities teams upgrading safety across site walkways. Quick drying times mean paths can be returned to light use the same day, keeping downtime to a minimum on occupied sites.

Suitable Surfaces

  • Concrete paths, footpaths and poured walkways

  • Paving slabs, flagstones and pre-cast concrete pavers

  • Brick, block paving and masonry pathways

  • Rendered and screeded path surfaces

  • Garden steps, ramps and sloped access routes

  • Previously painted paths in sound, stable condition

  • Interior and exterior pedestrian routes

Note: Not recommended for asphalt, self-levelling screeds, natural stone with heavily protruding aggregate, or polished surfaces without mechanical preparation first. Timber and metal sections benefit from a compatible primer before coating. Always trial a small, out-of-the-way area first — substrate porosity, surface condition and existing coatings all affect adhesion and final appearance.

Coverage & Spread Rate

  • 6–8 m² per litre per coat, depending on porosity and surface texture

  • 5 L tin covers roughly 15–20 m² with two coats

  • 10 L tin covers roughly 30–40 m² with two coats

  • 20 L tin covers up to 65 m² with two coats

  • 1000 L IBC covers up to 3,250 m² with two coats — suited to estates, parks and large commercial contracts

Rough, worn or highly porous paths will draw in more product. Avoid heavy over-application, as this can affect texture consistency and slow drying.

Drying & Curing Times (@ 18 °C)

  • Touch dry: 1–2 hours

  • Recoat: 2–4 hours

  • Light foot traffic: 12 hours

  • Normal pedestrian use: 24–48 hours

  • Full cure and weather resistance: 7 days

Cold, damp or humid conditions will extend these times. Do not apply outdoors if rain is forecast within 2 hours.

Storage & Clean-Up

  • Store sealed containers between 5–30 °C, dry and frost-free

  • Supplied ready to use — thin only for spray application (max 5% clean water)

  • Over-thinning reduces film build and weakens slip resistance

  • Reseal firmly between uses to prevent skinning

  • For 1000 L IBC orders, keep the tank level and agitate thoroughly before dispensing so pigment and aggregate stay evenly distributed

  • Wash tools with clean water straight after use

  • Dispose of waste in line with local regulations

Finish & Appearance

Dries to a durable textured satin finish that maximises grip while keeping a neat, even appearance across the full length of the path. The anti-slip profile is distributed consistently so there are no smooth patches or heavy build-up at edges. Higher-contrast colours work well for marking path edges, step nosings and changes in level where visibility supports safety.

Safety Notice

A water-based coating with low hazard during application. Wear gloves and eye protection, and ventilate well when working indoors. Avoid eye contact and prolonged skin exposure. Keep children and pets away until fully cured. Not for ingestion. Consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full guidance.

Additional Notes

Supplied in 5 L, 10 L and 20 L tins plus 1000 L IBC tanks, covering everything from a single garden path to full-site safety upgrades. For consistent colour across large areas, order all material from one batch. During busy periods product may arrive in plain or trade-labelled packaging, with no change to performance or specification. Packaging can occasionally pick up minor damage in transit — please do not order if that would be unsatisfactory.

Where It's Used

Extreme Anti-Slip Path Paint is used wherever underfoot grip on a walkway matters:

  • Residential garden paths, side passages and front entrance routes

  • Care homes, sheltered housing and accessible access routes

  • Schools, colleges, hospitals and public institutions

  • Parks, allotments, churchyards and community grounds

  • Warehouses, factories and industrial site walkways

  • Commercial premises, retail approaches and communal pathways

  • Riverside paths, coastal walkways and shaded routes prone to algae

Suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, performing reliably under regular foot traffic and changeable weather.

Application Instructions

Surface Preparation

Make sure the path is clean, dry and free from dust, grease, oil, moss, algae and any loose material. Sweep or vacuum thoroughly. For exterior paths, pressure wash where needed and allow the surface to dry fully — treat moss and algae with a suitable remover first, as growth left in place will lift the coating. Scrape or sand away flaking paint or chalking layers and feather the edges smooth. Fill cracks and spalled sections with a compatible repair mortar and let repairs cure before painting.

Priming

No separate primer is normally required on sound, well-prepared paths. On highly porous concrete, masonry or screed, apply a diluted first coat using up to 10% clean water to help penetration and adhesion, then allow it to dry fully. Timber and metal elements should be primed with a compatible product.

Mixing

Stir for at least 2 minutes with a paddle mixer or broad flat stirrer so the silica grit is evenly dispersed. Stir occasionally during application to keep the aggregate suspended. The product is ready to use — do not over-thin.

First Coat

Apply with a brush or medium-nap roller, spreading evenly across the path without heavy build-up. For spray application, thin with a maximum of 5% clean water. Work in the direction of the path and cut in edges and borders neatly with a brush. Allow 2–4 hours before recoating.

Second Coat

Apply the second coat at right angles to the first for uniform coverage and consistent texture. Work methodically, checking for thin or missed areas as you go. This coat locks in the grit and builds the durability the path needs for long-term traffic.

Optional Third Coat

On heavily used routes — public footpaths, industrial walkways, sloped or shaded paths that stay damp — a third coat after the second has fully dried gives extra film build, longer service life and stronger grip.

Curing & Reopening Times

  • Light foot traffic after 12 hours
  • Normal pedestrian use after 24–48 hours, depending on conditions
  • Full cure and weather resistance after 7 days

Keep the path clear of heavy rain, standing water and aggressive cleaning for the first 48 hours after the final coat.

Pro Tips

  • Apply in dry conditions between 10–25 °C.
  • Avoid extreme heat, direct intense sun and high humidity.
  • Never coat a damp path, or one where rain is due within 2 hours.
  • Mask edges, borders and lawn lines — peel the tape while the coating is still slightly tacky for a crisp finish.
  • Work in manageable sections to keep a wet edge and avoid lap marks.
  • On long paths, plan your exit so you aren't painting yourself into a corner.
  • A contrasting colour on steps and level changes improves visibility and supports safety compliance.

Clean-Up

Wash brushes, rollers and spray equipment with clean water immediately after use; warm soapy water will shift partially dried residue. Reseal tins firmly to prevent skinning. Dispose of waste and empty containers responsibly and never pour residues into drains or watercourses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What surfaces can I apply Anti-Slip Path Paint to?
Anti-Slip Path Paint is designed for concrete paths, paving slabs, block paving, brick, masonry, render, and screed, and also performs well on garden steps, ramps, and previously painted paths in sound condition. For best results, the surface must be clean, dry, structurally sound, and free from loose material before application.
Can Anti-Slip Path Paint be used outdoors in all weather?
Yes, this product is fully UV and weather resistant, formulated to withstand rain, frost, and prolonged sun exposure without cracking, peeling, or fading. For best results, apply in dry conditions between 10°C and 25°C and avoid rainfall for at least 2 hours after application.
Does Anti-Slip Path Paint provide anti-slip protection?
Yes, this anti-slip path paint contains fine silica grit aggregate that creates a high-friction, slip-resistant surface once cured. It is ideal for wet, mossy, shaded, or sloped walkways and maintains grip even when wet.
How does Anti-Slip Path Paint compare to a standard path sealer?
A sealer mainly protects and darkens the surface, while this product forms a durable coloured coating that hides staining and patch repairs. It offers longer-lasting colour, stronger UV protection, and genuine slip resistance in a single application.
What's the expected lifespan of Anti-Slip Path Paint in UK climate?
With proper preparation and a two-coat application, this path paint typically lasts 3–5 years on regularly trafficked walkways and longer on lightly used paths. Maintenance coats can extend its durability further.
Is primer needed before applying Anti-Slip Path Paint?
A separate primer is not usually required as this product is self-priming on sound, prepared surfaces. On highly porous concrete or masonry, a first coat thinned with up to 10% clean water improves penetration and adhesion.
Does Anti-Slip Path Paint need a primer on timber or metal sections?
Yes, timber and metal elements such as edging, ramps, or handrails should be treated with a compatible primer first to ensure long-term adhesion.
How many coats of Anti-Slip Path Paint are recommended for best results?
Two coats are recommended for most paths, while high-traffic areas such as public walkways, ramps, and sloped routes may require three coats for maximum durability and consistent anti-slip performance.
Can Anti-Slip Path Paint be sprayed for faster application?
Yes, it can be sprayed after thinning with a maximum of 5% clean water, but it should be back-rolled immediately to ensure even distribution of anti-slip particles. Brushes and rollers are recommended for edges and detailed areas.
How do I ensure a uniform colour with Anti-Slip Path Paint on long paths?
Mix all tins before application to avoid colour variation, maintain a wet edge while working, and apply in manageable sections to prevent lap marks.
How should I clean tools after using Anti-Slip Path Paint?
Clean brushes, rollers, and equipment with clean water immediately after use, as this is a water-based product. Dried residue may require warm soapy water or specialist cleaning solutions.
How much coverage can I expect per litre of Anti-Slip Path Paint?
Coverage is approximately 6–8 m² per litre per coat, depending on surface porosity and profile. Rough, worn, or heavily porous paths will require more product.
How much does a 5L or 20L tin of Anti-Slip Path Paint cover?
A 5L tin covers approximately 15–20 m² with two coats, a 10L tin around 30–40 m², and a 20L tin up to 65 m². A 1000L IBC tank covers up to 3,250 m² with two coats.
Will Anti-Slip Path Paint stop moss and algae returning?
The coating gives moss and algae far less to grip onto and makes routine cleaning much easier, but no coating prevents growth permanently. Regular sweeping and occasional washing will keep grip at its best.
How long before I can walk on Anti-Slip Path Paint?
The coating is touch dry in 1–2 hours, ready for light foot traffic after around 12 hours, and normal pedestrian use after 24–48 hours, with full cure and weather resistance at 7 days.
Is Anti-Slip Path Paint pet-safe once dry?
Yes, once fully cured it is safe for pets, children, and everyday outdoor use. Keep pets and children off the path until the coating has fully hardened.
Is Anti-Slip Path Paint low-odour and environmentally safe?
Yes, this is a water-based, low-VOC coating with minimal odour, suitable for residential use and for occupied buildings such as schools, care homes, and offices.
Can Anti-Slip Path Paint be used on garden steps and ramps?
Yes, it is well suited to garden steps, ramps, landings, and sloped access routes, where a contrasting colour on edges and nosings further improves visibility and safety.
