For sheds and cladding, match the coating to the timber, previous finish and exposure. Floor paint, preservative, decorative wood paint and varnish have separate roles.
Assess the timber
Resolve rot, water entry and damaged timber before coating. Identify any existing preservative, oil or paint and confirm compatibility with the proposed finish. Paint does not repair timber defects.
Choose the finish
Compare woodcare and varnishes and products approved for the particular exterior timber. A clear finish retains visible grain; a coloured coating changes appearance. Test a small prepared area and follow the selected product’s preparation instructions.
Check yacht-varnish claims
A yacht name does not establish marine-grade protection or approval for all outdoor wood. Confirm the actual product’s weather exposure and maintenance guidance. Do not assume it is suitable for decking, continuous immersion or food-contact surfaces.
Application
Confirm primer, coat count, coverage and recoat timing. Follow the current temperature and moisture limits, and use the product safety sheet for handling and ventilation. Do not transfer instructions from a different paint or varnish.
Maintenance
Inspect exposed edges and joints, investigate peeling and maintain the finish as approved. Do not promise a universal three-to-five-year or eight-to-ten-year coating life. Describe the timber, existing finish and exposure when requesting product advice.
