Expert Tips for Painting High-Moisture Areas: Kitchens, Bathrooms, and More

Expert Tips for Painting High-Moisture Areas: Kitchens, Bathrooms, and More

Kitchens and bathrooms need a coating suited to the actual surface and exposure. A washable, satin or moisture-resistant description does not make a decorative paint a waterproofing system or establish approval for a shower floor.

Assess moisture before choosing paint

Investigate leaks, recurring condensation, damaged ventilation and damp material. Decorating over a continuing moisture source is not a repair. If mould is extensive, recurring or linked to building damage, obtain qualified assessment rather than relying on a paint recommendation.

Separate wall decorating from wet-room systems

Browse interior paints for approved wall and ceiling uses. Confirm cleaning performance, substrate, finish and suitability for the actual room. Directly wetted shower surfaces and wet-room floors need a specifically approved complete system; general floor paint and a textured additive do not establish waterproofing.

Use the right primer

Check whether a compatible primer or stain blocker is required. A stain-blocking description does not mean the product stops moisture entering a wall. Confirm compatibility with the retained finish and topcoat, and allow the substrate to meet the selected system’s readiness requirements.

Clean safely before coating

Use an appropriate product for the surface and contamination, following its label and safety instructions. Do not improvise a bleach mixture or mix cleaning chemicals. Obtain professional help where the extent or material makes cleaning unsuitable for a simple DIY treatment.

Apply and maintain as specified

Follow coat count, tools, drying stages and ventilation instructions rather than applying a shared two-coat or drying rule. Confirm compatibility before coating near sealants, and do not treat paint as a repair to failed joints. Use the specified cleaning method only after the finish is ready for it.

Further guidance

Read wet-room suitability guidance. Government guidance explains why underlying damp and mould causes need to be addressed: damp and mould guidance. Seek a product-specific recommendation with details of the surface, moisture problem and intended use.
