Extreme Paints Oil-Based Satinwood Paint is a premium alkyd-based satinwood coating designed for both interior and exterior wood and metal surfaces that demand a long-lasting, professional finish. Built with a high-solids formula, this satinwood paint forms a dense, flexible film that resists yellowing, moisture, and everyday wear, making it perfect for high-traffic areas and demanding decorative projects.

Unlike water-based alternatives, the oil-based composition offers extended open time, allowing superior self-levelling and a smooth, brush-mark-free result on every coat. When applied over Extreme Paints Metal Oxide Primer or a suitable wood undercoat, it provides a tough 50 µm dry film that stands up to regular cleaning and repeated contact in homes, offices, and commercial interiors.

Manufactured in the UK to strict ISO 9001 standards, Extreme Paints Oil-Based Satinwood Paint delivers a refined 35–40% satin sheen—a subtle balance between low-sheen elegance and durable protection. Ideal for achieving a professional decorative finish on joinery, skirting, furniture, and primed metalwork, it keeps surfaces looking crisp and colour-true for years to come.

Ideal Uses

This hard-wearing satinwood is suitable for a wide variety of projects, including:

  • Interior and exterior woodwork such as doors, skirting boards, window frames, and trim.

  • MDF cabinets, shelving, and retail fixtures where impact resistance is essential.

  • Primed metal railings, radiator covers, and handrails that require a smooth, washable finish.

  • Hallways, staircases, and utility rooms exposed to moisture or frequent cleaning.

Colours & Pack Sizes

Available in two classic stock colours White and Magnolia across 5 L, 10 L, and 20 L tins to suit small touch-ups or large trade projects. Custom BS 4800 or RAL shades can be produced for orders of 80 L or more, ensuring perfect colour matching for branding or bespoke decorative schemes.

Coverage & Film Build

Provides approximately 6–8 m² per litre per coat on smooth timber, achieving a 50 µm dry film thickness when applied as directed. Two thin, even coats are recommended for best colour depth and durability.

Drying & Recoat Times @ 18 °C

  • Touch dry: 4–6 hours

  • Recoat: 6–8 hours

  • Handle: 24 hours

  • Full cure: 7 days for maximum hardness and chemical resistance

Application & Clean-Up

Stir thoroughly before use. Apply using a synthetic bristle brush, gloss roller, or HVLP sprayer. Thin with up to 10% white spirit if spraying. Clean brushes and equipment with white spirit immediately after application.

Storage & Safety

Store tightly sealed between 5 °C and 30 °C, away from open flames or direct heat. This solvent-based paint is flammable use in well-ventilated areas and wear appropriate gloves and respiratory protection. Dispose of waste according to local regulations.

Surface Preparation

  • Wood: Remove wax or grease, sand to a smooth finish with P180 grit, and wipe away all dust. Bare timber should be primed with a suitable wood primer or undercoat for maximum adhesion.
  • Metal: Degrease thoroughly, remove any rust, and apply Extreme Paints Metal Oxide Primer before painting.
  • Previously Painted Surfaces: Lightly abrade glossy or sealed areas to a dull, matte surface to ensure proper keying before recoating.

Mixing

Stir thoroughly with a paint paddle for at least 2 minutes, making sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the tin to achieve a uniform consistency.

Application

Apply with a high-quality synthetic brush, gloss roller, or HVLP sprayer. Lay down thin, even coats to achieve the best satinwood finish. After the first coat, allow 6–8 hours drying time before applying the second coat at right angles for consistent coverage and improved durability.

Drying & Curing

  • Touch Dry: 4–6 hours at 18 °C.
  • Recoat Time: 6–8 hours.
  • Handle Time: 24 hours.
  • Full Cure: 7 days for full hardness, chemical resistance, and long-term durability.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Clean brushes, rollers, and spray equipment immediately after use with white spirit. For long-term maintenance, wipe painted surfaces regularly with a damp cloth and mild detergent to maintain sheen and colour clarity.

Storage & Safety

Store sealed between 5 °C and 30 °C in a dry, frost-free environment, away from open flames or ignition sources. Ensure good ventilation during use and wear gloves and respiratory protection when spraying or applying in confined areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Extreme Paints Oil-Based Satinwood different from water-based paints?
This professional-grade alkyd formula provides a smoother, self-levelling finish with longer open time, allowing brush marks to settle and giving a classic satin sheen. Unlike many water-based options, it resists yellowing, abrasion, and moisture for a long-lasting decorative coating.
Can I use this satinwood paint on both interior and exterior surfaces?
Yes, it is formulated for interior and exterior applications, making it ideal for woodwork such as skirting boards, window frames, and doors, as well as properly primed exterior metal surfaces like railings or gates.
Do I need a primer before applying this paint?
For bare wood, a wood primer or undercoat is recommended for maximum adhesion and smoother coverage. Bare or rusty metal surfaces must first be treated with Extreme Paints Metal Oxide Primer to prevent corrosion.
How many coats are required for full coverage?
Two thin coats are recommended to achieve optimal colour depth, film build, and durability. The first coat provides adhesion and base coverage, while the second coat ensures a flawless satin finish.
What is the drying and recoat time?
At an ambient temperature of 18 °C, the paint is touch-dry in 4–6 hours and ready for recoat in 6–8 hours. It can be carefully handled after 24 hours, with full curing achieved in 7 days for maximum hardness.
Is it suitable for use on MDF or cabinets?
Yes, this satinwood paint adheres well to MDF and furniture-grade boards once primed or sealed, making it perfect for cabinets, shelving, and custom joinery projects.
Can it be sprayed for large projects?
Absolutely. The high-solids formulation can be thinned with up to 10% white spirit for HVLP spraying, allowing for smooth, professional finishes on large panels or commercial joinery.
Will this paint yellow over time?
The high-quality alkyd resin contains advanced anti-yellowing additives, offering superior resistance to discolouration compared to standard oil-based finishes, even in areas exposed to sunlight or indoor heat.
How do I clean tools and equipment after application?
Clean all brushes, rollers, and spray equipment immediately after use with white spirit to prevent hardening of the coating. Avoid using water, as this is a solvent-based product.
What coverage can I expect per litre?
On smooth timber surfaces, each litre covers approximately 6–8 m² per coat, depending on surface porosity and application technique.
Is this product safe for use around children or pets?
Once fully cured, the coating is safe for domestic environments. During application and drying, ensure good ventilation, keep children and pets away, and follow all safety guidance on the container.
Can I apply this paint in cold or damp weather?
For best results, apply in dry conditions with temperatures between 10 °C and 25 °C. Cold or damp conditions will slow drying and may affect the final sheen level.
