Vintage Varnish Clear Polyurethane Varnish is a premium single-pack, solvent-borne varnish designed to give interior wood a crystal-clear, high-gloss finish with long-lasting protection. Formulated with advanced long-oil polyurethane resins, it penetrates deep into bare or previously coated timber, creating a flexible, abrasion-resistant film that stands up to everyday wear and tear.

This professional-grade clear varnish highlights the natural grain of wood, leaving a deep, glass-like gloss that resists scratches, spills, and scuffs. Integrated UV absorbers help prevent yellowing or ambering over time, maintaining a clean and contemporary look far beyond what traditional oil-based varnishes provide.

Thanks to its self-levelling properties, Vintage Varnish brushes on smoothly without drag marks, making it easy to achieve a flawless, showroom-quality finish. The low-odour solvent formula ensures comfortable indoor application while still delivering the strength and durability expected from a trade-quality polyurethane coating.

Manufactured in the UK under strict ISO 9001 quality standards, this varnish is supplied ready to use in 5 L, 10 L, and 20 L tins, supporting projects from small furniture restoration to large-scale commercial joinery. Whether you are refinishing doors, windows, floors, or bar tops, Vintage Varnish provides exceptional clarity, colour retention, and long-term protection.

Ideal Uses:

  • Interior doors and window frames

  • Skirting boards and stair handrails

  • Hardwood and softwood floors

  • Furniture tops, dressers, and tables

  • Bar and counter surfaces

  • Musical instruments (always test a small area first)

Sizes & Coverage:

  • 5 L: approx. 30 m² (two coats)

  • 10 L: approx. 60 m² (two coats)

  • 20 L: approx. 120 m² (two coats)

Typical coverage is 6–8 m² per litre per coat on planed hardwood. Porous softwoods may absorb more material.

Finish:

High-gloss, crystal clear film that enhances natural grain and resists ambering.

Drying & Recoat Times @18 °C:

  • Touch Dry: 6–8 hours

  • Recoat: 12 hours

  • Light Use: 24 hours

  • Full Cure: 7 days

Storage & Clean-Up:

Store between 5–30 °C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Reseal tins tightly after use. Clean brushes and tools with white spirit while the varnish is still wet.

Surface Preparation:

Ensure the wood is clean, dry, and free from grease, wax, or old flaking coatings. Sand to fresh timber using P180–P240 grit to create a smooth, even surface. Remove all sanding dust and check that the wood moisture content is no more than 15% before application.

First Coat:

For bare wood, thin the varnish by up to 10% with white spirit to aid penetration and adhesion. Apply evenly with a high-quality natural-bristle brush, working along the direction of the grain for a smooth, consistent finish.

Denibbing Between Coats:

Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 12 hours. Lightly sand with P320 abrasive to remove any raised grain and improve adhesion. Wipe away all dust before applying further coats.

Build Coats:

Apply one to two full-viscosity coats to achieve a deep, protective gloss. Maintain a wet edge throughout the application to avoid lap lines or streaks.

Extra Durability:

For floors, worktops, or high-traffic surfaces, a fourth coat can be applied after 24 hours to increase film build and maximise resistance to wear and scratching.

Application Conditions:

Avoid applying below 10 °C, in high humidity, or in direct intense sunlight. Ensure good ventilation throughout the drying period to achieve an even, crystal-clear finish.
