Extreme Paints Barn and Shed Paint is a high-performance, oil-based polyurethane exterior coating engineered for farm buildings, outbuildings, metal cladding and timber sheds. Formulated to combine the durable protection of solvent systems with improved handling characteristics, this PU finish gives a weatherproof, flexible film that moves with wood expansion while locking out moisture, rust and chalking.

It dries quickly to a smooth satin oxide gloss with low odour compared with older solvent enamels, and cleans up easily with white spirit.

This formula is designed for practical, long-lasting protection where aesthetics and durability matter. The modified PU resin resists abrasion, jet-wash cleaning, oil and grease, making it ideal for agricultural doors, corrugated steel panels, galvanised sheds and timber cladding. The paint self-levels to a uniform finish that retains colour and sheen even after repeated exposure to sun, rain and seasonal movement.

Key features

  • Fast drying, low odour oil-based PU formula for exterior use.

  • Flexible but tough satin oxide gloss that resists flaking and chalking.

  • Good adhesion to timber, galvanised and primed metals, aluminium and masonry.

  • Easy maintenance and jet-wash cleanable once fully cured.

  • Available in a broad workshop palette, with custom BS or RAL tints on large orders.

Suitable substrates

Suitable for softwood, hardwood and plywood, galvanised steel (abraded), primed metal and aluminium, concrete panels and cement board, brickwork and rendered masonry. Bare steel should be spot-primed with an anti-corrosive oxide primer prior to topcoat.

Colours available

Light Grey, Mid Grey, Dark Grey, Mid Green, Dark Green, Blue, Yellow, Red, Black, White, Orange. Custom BS4800 or RAL shades available on orders over 100 L for fleet or large scale projects.

Coverage and finish

Typical spread rate is 6–8 m² per litre per coat on smooth prepared surfaces. The paint delivers a smooth satin oxide gloss; two coats are recommended for best durability and uniform colour. Apply thin, even coats and avoid over application to reduce risk of runs.

Drying and recoat times (at 18 °C)

  • Touch dry: 2–4 hours.

  • Recoat window: 2–4 hours.

  • Full cure and weather resistance: 7 days. Times will extend in cool or damp conditions.

Storage and clean up

Store sealed between 5 °C and 30 °C, away from frost and ignition sources. Clean brushes and equipment with white spirit while paint is still wet. Order your total project volume in one batch to ensure consistent colour across the job.

Safety and handling

This is a solvent-based, flammable coating. Use only in well-ventilated areas, keep away from sparks and open flames, and wear appropriate PPE including gloves and eye protection. Keep out of reach of children and follow local disposal regulations for leftover product and containers. For full safety information consult the product Safety Data Sheet.

Recommended uses

Barn doors and cladding, galvanised metal sheds, wooden and concrete farm buildings, corrugated steel panels, and commercial outbuildings where a durable, low maintenance finish is required.

Surface Preparation

Ensure all surfaces are sound, dry and clean before painting. Remove dust, dirt, loose paint and any traces of grease or oil. For timber, moisture content should be below 15% to prevent adhesion problems. Abrade galvanised steel lightly to create a key and degrease thoroughly. Bare steel or areas with rust must be spot-primed using a high-quality anti-corrosive oxide primer for maximum protection.

Priming

Prime bare steel or rusted metal with an anti-corrosive oxide primer to improve adhesion and enhance long-term durability. Galvanised or aluminium surfaces that have been abraded may not require a separate primer if well prepared, but a suitable etch primer is recommended in harsh environments.

Mixing

Stir the paint thoroughly for at least 2 minutes using a paddle or strong stir stick. Ensure pigments and resins are evenly blended to achieve a consistent colour and finish throughout the application.

Application

Apply using a good quality brush, medium-nap roller, or sprayer (HVLP or airless with a 0.015–0.017" tip). Begin with a thin, even first coat, maintaining a wet edge to avoid lap marks. Apply the second coat after 2–4 hours, ideally at 90° to the first coat for even coverage and improved durability. Avoid over-brushing or excessive film build to maintain a smooth satin oxide gloss.

Curing

Protect the painted surface from rain and heavy condensation for at least 6 hours after application. Light handling or foot traffic can resume after 24 hours. The coating will achieve full chemical and weather resistance after a complete 7-day cure.

Clean-Up

Clean all brushes, rollers and spray equipment immediately after use with white spirit. Dispose of any leftover paint and containers in accordance with local environmental regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Extreme Paints Barn & Shed Paint last outdoors?
When applied in two coats over a properly prepared surface, this PU oil-based formula protects for 5–7 years even in exposed farm or coastal environments.
Can I apply this paint directly onto galvanised metal?
Yes, but the surface must be abraded and degreased first; for harsh conditions, an etch primer is recommended for maximum adhesion.
Is this paint suitable for wooden garden sheds?
Yes, it flexes with timber movement, preventing cracking and flaking on softwood, hardwood, or plywood when applied to dry, clean wood.
What is the recommended drying time between coats?
At around 18 °C, it is touch-dry in 2–4 hours and recoatable after the same period, allowing most jobs to be completed in one day.
Do I need a primer on bare steel or rusted areas?
Yes, bare steel and rust spots must be treated with an anti-corrosive oxide primer to ensure long-term rust protection.
Can it be sprayed for large farm buildings?
Yes, it can be applied with HVLP or airless spray using a 0.015–0.017" tip, with light thinning in white spirit if needed.
How many coats are recommended for maximum durability?
Two thin, even coats are recommended to achieve a uniform satin oxide gloss and full weather resistance.
Will the colour fade in strong sunlight?
UV-resistant pigments minimise fading, with only slight dulling over many years compared to standard exterior paints.
Is it safe to use indoors or in enclosed spaces?
No, it is solvent-based and must only be used in well-ventilated areas with PPE such as gloves and a respirator.
What surfaces are not suitable for this paint?
It should not be used on unprepared, polished, or previously sealed non-porous surfaces where adhesion is poor.
How do I clean tools after application?
Clean brushes, rollers, and spray equipment immediately with white spirit and dispose of waste materials safely.
