Extreme Paints Garage & External Door Paint is a single‑pack, heavy‑duty enamel formulated from premium long‑oil alkyd resins to deliver a resilient gloss coating on metal or timber doors. Rust‑inhibiting pigments guard steel against corrosion, while the flexible film expands and contracts with seasonal temperature swings to prevent cracking and peeling.

Ideal for up‑grading metal up‑and‑over garage shutters, side‑hinged timber doors, roller shutters and even commercial fire exits, the paint level‑flows to a high sheen that resists staining from road salt, oils and diesel fumes. Manufactured in the UK under ISO 9001 controls, it is available in convenient 5 L, 10 L and 20 L tins for domestic or trade projects.

Suitable Substrates

Mild or galvanised steel (primed), aluminium (primed), hardwood, softwood, previously painted metal or timber that is sound and de‑glossed.

  1. Surface Preparation – Remove grease, rust, and loose paint. Sand glossy areas to a matte key. Ensure substrate is dry.
  2. Priming – Bare or rusty steel should be spot‑primed with a compatible anti‑corrosive oxide primer; aluminium and galvanised metal require an etch or universal metal primer.
  3. Mixing – Stir paint with paddle mixer for 2 minutes until pigment is uniform.
  4. First Coat – Apply a thin, even layer by brush, short‑nap roller, or spray (HVLP/airless 0.015–0.017″ tip, thin ≤ 10 % white spirit if needed).
  5. Second Coat – Recoat after 6–8 h, applying at right angles for full 50 µm DFT coverage.
  6. Curing – Keep door closed and protected from rain for 24 h; light handling after 24 h, full hardness in 7 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this garage door paint on automatic roller shutter doors?
Yes—once the surface is degreased and a suitable metal primer is applied, the gloss enamel withstands frequent rolling without flaking.
Do I need to prime previously painted garage or external doors?
If the old door paint is sound, just clean and de-gloss it. Primer is only required for bare or rusty metal surfaces.
How much gloss door paint do I need for a single garage door?
A 5 L tin of Extreme Paints Garage Door Paint covers around 12 m² in two coats—sufficient for most single up-and-over garage doors.
Can I spray this gloss enamel paint indoors?
Yes—garage and external door paint can be sprayed indoors with proper ventilation and a respirator. Follow thinning guidelines.
Is the gloss finish easy to clean on garage doors?
Yes—this solvent-based gloss paint creates a non-porous surface that easily wipes clean with mild detergent.
Will the colour fade if the garage door is exposed to sunlight?
No—UV-stable pigments in this garage door gloss enamel ensure strong colour retention for over 5 years. Note: deep reds may dull slightly faster.
Can I apply this garage door enamel in cold weather?
Apply this metal and wood door paint between 10 °C and 25 °C. Lower temperatures slow drying and may affect the finish.
Does this paint resist oil or petrol stains on garage doors?
Yes—its solvent-based gloss coating resists oil, diesel, and road grime, especially if cleaned promptly.
How long before I can open a painted garage door?
Keep the door closed for 24 h after applying Extreme Paints Garage & External Door Paint. Light operation after 48 h, full cure in 7 days.
Which roller sleeve gives the smoothest gloss finish on doors?
A 4 mm mohair or foam roller is ideal for applying this high-gloss door paint smoothly without brush marks.
Can this product be custom tinted to match a specific RAL or BS colour?
Yes—custom colours are available for orders of 20 L or more. Contact us for lead time and options.
Will this gloss paint yellow indoors on white doors?
Like most alkyd-based gloss paints, whites may slightly yellow over time in shaded indoor areas.
Can I use this paint on PVCu or plastic doors?
No—PVCu requires specialist primers and two-pack door paint systems not compatible with this product.
What’s the shelf life once the tin is opened?
If resealed properly, the remaining garage door gloss paint stays usable for up to 6 months.
How do I prep flaking gloss paint before repainting garage doors?
Scrape off flaking areas, sand the edges smooth, clean with panel wipe, then apply Extreme Paints Gloss Enamel for garage doors.
