Extreme Paints Garage & External Door Paint is a single-pack, heavy-duty enamel formulated from premium long-oil polyurethane resins. It delivers a resilient, high-gloss coating suitable for metal and timber doors, offering superior protection against corrosion, cracking, and peeling.

The rust-inhibiting pigments provide excellent defence for steel surfaces, while the flexible film adapts to seasonal temperature changes, preventing flaking or damage. This makes it ideal for metal up-and-over garage shutters, side-hinged timber doors, roller shutters, and commercial fire exits.

Its self-leveling formula creates a smooth, high-sheen finish that resists staining from road salt, oils, and diesel fumes, ensuring a professional appearance. Manufactured in the UK under ISO 9001 quality controls, it is available in 5 L, 10 L, and 20 L tins to suit both domestic and trade projects.

Suitable Substrates:

Mild or galvanised steel (primed), aluminium (primed), hardwood, softwood, previously painted metal or timber that is sound and de-glossed.

Colours Available:

Light Grey, Mid Grey, Dark Grey, Black, Blue, Red, Post Office Red, Mid Green, Dark Green, Yellow, Orange, White.
Custom BS/RAL shades available for orders of 100 L or more.

Spreading Rate (Coverage):

5–6 m² per litre per coat on smooth metal surfaces.

Drying Times (@ 18 °C):

  • Touch dry: 6–8 hours

  • Recoat: 6–8 hours

  • Full cure: 7 days

Storage & Clean-Up:

Store between 5–30 °C, away from open flames. Seal tins firmly between uses. Clean brushes, rollers, or spray equipment immediately with white spirit or standard thinner while still wet.

Batch & Delivery:

Order total required quantity in a single batch for consistent colour. Plain tins may be supplied during peak demand; product performance and specification remain identical.

Safety Disclaimer:

Flammable solvent-based enamel. Apply in well-ventilated areas, keep away from sparks or flames, and wear gloves and a respirator if spraying. Follow the product Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for complete safety guidance.

Surface Preparation:

Before painting, remove all grease, dirt, rust, and loose paint from the door or metal/timber surface. Sand any glossy or smooth areas to create a key for better adhesion. Ensure the substrate is completely dry, with moisture levels below 4%, to avoid peeling or blistering. On timber, fill cracks or imperfections with a suitable filler and sand smooth for an even finish.

Priming:

For bare or rusty steel, apply a compatible anti-corrosive oxide primer to protect the metal and improve adhesion. Aluminium and galvanised metals require either an etch primer or a universal metal primer to ensure the enamel bonds properly. Previously painted surfaces should be sound, clean, and de-glossed. Always allow primers to fully dry before applying the topcoat.

Mixing:

Stir the paint thoroughly using a paddle mixer for at least 2 minutes to ensure the pigment is fully dispersed. Proper mixing ensures a consistent colour, sheen, and smooth application. For spraying, check the consistency; thin up to 10% with white spirit if necessary, but avoid over-thinning which reduces film build and durability.

First Coat:

Apply a thin, even layer of paint using a brush, short-nap roller, or suitable spray equipment (HVLP or airless 0.015–0.017” tip). Work along the grain of timber or in the direction of the metal panels to avoid streaks. Ensure all edges, corners, and recessed areas are covered to prevent exposed spots that can rust or degrade over time.

Second Coat:

After 6–8 hours at 18 °C, apply the second coat at right angles to the first. This ensures full coverage and an even film thickness of approximately 50 µm dry. Multiple thin coats give better durability and gloss retention than one heavy coat, and reduce the risk of runs or sags on vertical surfaces.

Curing:

Protect the painted surface from rain, dust, and debris for at least 24 hours. Light handling is allowed after this period, but full mechanical and chemical resistance develops after 7 days at 18 °C. During curing, avoid exposure to extreme temperatures or frost, which can compromise the finish.

Pro Tips:

For best results, apply in temperatures between 10–25 °C and in dry conditions. Keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks and work in manageable sections. Mask edges carefully and remove tape while the paint is touch-dry to prevent tearing. Clean brushes, rollers, and spray equipment immediately after use with white spirit or standard thinner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this paint directly on bare metal doors?
No, bare steel or aluminium must be primed first with a suitable anti-corrosive or etch primer. Priming ensures maximum adhesion and long-term rust protection.
Is this paint suitable for wooden garage doors?
Yes, it can be applied to hardwood or softwood garage doors as long as the timber is clean, dry, and lightly sanded. Always fill gaps or cracks before painting for a smooth finish.
How long should I wait before closing or using the door?
Keep the door closed and undisturbed for at least 24 hours to allow the coating to set. Full hardness and chemical resistance are achieved after seven days.
Can this paint be applied over old paint?
Yes, as long as the existing coating is sound, clean, and de-glossed with sanding. Remove any peeling or flaking sections before applying the new enamel.
What is the best way to apply this paint?
It can be applied with a brush, short-nap roller, or sprayed using HVLP or airless equipment. Apply two thin coats for the most durable, even gloss finish.
Does this paint protect against rust?
Yes, the formula contains rust-inhibiting pigments that help prevent corrosion when used over a properly primed surface. Bare metal must always be primed first.
Is it weatherproof once cured?
Yes, after full curing it forms a tough, weather-resistant coating that resists UV damage, rain, and seasonal temperature changes without cracking or peeling.
Can I thin the paint for spraying?
Yes, you can thin up to 10% with white spirit if using spray equipment. Avoid over-thinning as it reduces film build and protective performance.
How much coverage can I expect per litre?
Expect approximately 5–6 m² of coverage per litre per coat on smooth metal or timber. Rough or porous surfaces may require more product for full coverage.
What colours are available for this paint?
It comes in a wide range of colours including greys, blues, greens, reds, black, white, yellow, and orange. Custom RAL or BS shades are available on bulk orders.
Can this paint withstand car exhaust fumes and road salt?
Yes, the polyurethane enamel is designed to resist staining from oils, diesel fumes, and road salt, making it ideal for garage doors and external entrances.
How do I clean tools after application?
Clean brushes, rollers, and spray equipment immediately with white spirit or standard thinner before the paint begins to cure for easy removal.
