Paintmaster Metal Oxide Primer is a long-oil alkyd coating infused with anti-corrosive metal oxide pigments that penetrate and seal bare steel, aluminium, cast iron, and hardwood timber, creating an active barrier against rust and corrosion. Its durable semi-shine finish maximizes adhesion for subsequent solvent-based enamels, machinery paints, and polyurethane topcoats, making it ideal for fabricators, skip builders, and DIY restorations.

Formulated with high solids and excellent flow, this primer can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed (HVLP or airless) directly from the tin. Thin up to 15% with white spirit only if necessary for spray atomization. Once cured, it remains slightly flexible to accommodate metal expansion and sands easily for super-smooth finishes.

Manufactured under stringent quality controls, it is available in Grey and Red oxide primer colours, supplied in 5 L, 10 L, and 20 L tins suitable for both small touch-ups and large projects.

Suitable Substrates
Mild steel, cast iron, galvanised steel (after etching), aluminium, hardwood timber, plywood, prepared concrete, masonry. Not suitable for plastic.

Colours Available
Grey • Red (Custom BS 4800 / RAL colours on orders ≥ 100 L)

Spreading Rate (Coverage)
6–8 m²/L/coat on smooth steel surfaces.

Drying Time
Touch-dry 6–8 h @ 18 °C. Recoat 6–8 h. Handle 24 h. Full cure 7 days.

Storage & Clean-up
Store sealed at 5–30 °C away from flame. Clean tools with white spirit solvent before paint sets.

Batch & Delivery
Order full quantity at once for consistent primer colour. During peak demand, tins may be plain white with correct labels; performance remains unchanged.

Safety Disclaimer
Flammable solvent-based primer. Use in well-ventilated areas, keep away from sparks, wear gloves and respirator. Dispose of waste responsibly. Keep out of reach of children. See SDS.

  • Surface Preparation: Degrease, power-brush rust, remove flaking coatings. Ensure surface is dry and dust-free for optimal adhesion.
  • Mixing: Stir with paddle mixer for 2 min, scraping sides and bottom.
  • Application: Apply by brush, roller, or spray. Use one thin, even coat (~50 µm DFT). Avoid runs; multiple light coats preferred over a single heavy coat.
  • Dry & Recoat: Allow 6–8 h @ 18 °C before applying compatible solvent-based topcoats. Sand lightly if over 48 h has passed.
  • Curing: Full corrosion protection after 7 days. Protect from rain for first 24 h.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose a metal oxide primer instead of a standard metal primer?
Metal oxide pigments provide active corrosion inhibition and a tough micaceous structure that blocks moisture, outperforming basic red-lead-free primers.
Can I topcoat metal oxide primer with water-based paint?
For best adhesion and longevity, use solvent-based or 2K topcoats. Water-based coatings can be applied after a 7-day cure and a light adhesion test.
Do I need to remove all rust before applying this primer?
Loose rust must be removed; tight, sound rust can remain and will be encapsulated by the primer’s anti-corrosive pigments.
How much thinner should I add for spraying?
Start at 5% white spirit; increase up to 15% only if the spray gun struggles to atomize. Excessive thinning reduces film build and rust protection.
Can this primer be used under epoxy or polyurethane paint?
Yes—after full dry, both systems adhere well. Always test adhesion on a small patch first.
What nozzle tip size is recommended for airless spraying?
Use 0.017–0.021" tip at 2000–2500 psi, keeping the gun 10–15 cm from surface.
Is the primer finish smooth enough as a standalone coating?
The semi-shine finish can act as a protective layer but will chalk outdoors over time—topcoat recommended for colour retention and corrosion resistance.
Will this primer adhere to galvanised metal?
Etch prime or abrade galvanised steel first; direct adhesion is limited.
How soon after priming can I weld steel?
Remove primer from weld areas; coating burns and produces fumes when welded through.
Does temperature affect drying times?
Below 10 °C, drying slows—extend recoat time to 12 h. Above 25 °C, work in shade to reduce flash-off.
Is this primer safe for marine splash zones?
Provides good salt-spray resistance but should be overcoated with marine-grade paint for continuous immersion.
Can I tint the grey primer to match topcoat?
Minor adjustments possible with universal alkyd tint pastes; large changes best done factory-tinted.
What is shelf life once opened?
Reseal tightly and use within 6 months; skin formation can occur if exposed to air.
Will this primer raise wood grain on timber?
Solvent penetrates hardwood without swelling fibers, leaving a smooth base for enamels or polyurethane paints.
How do I dispose of leftover primer?
Never pour down drains. Contact local hazardous-waste facility or allow residue to cure and dispose as controlled waste.
